Faux Vintage Tin Background

I would love to show you how I made this Faux Vintage Tin Background using Aluminum Foil and some of the Art Anthology Products that were in the Scraps Of Darkness Color Add On for the  December Kit-A Long December.

Step 1:
Take a sheet of plain cardstock (any color will do), and cut it to the size you want it.

Step 2 (optional):

If you want a pattern, you can use chipboard pieces, create a design with string or wire,  or come up with anything that is raised and adds dimension. I used some chipboard snowflakes that I cut out with my Sizzix in keeping with the Winter theme that I had in mind.
Glue the items into place and then coat the whole page with Mod Podge or whatever glue you like to use.

Step 3:

Cover the entire area with aluminum foil leaving some overhang on the sides. Press the aluminum foil against the page to seal it to the glue, then rub over any dimensional pieces to bring out the design.

Step 4:
Once you finish, fold the edges over and behind the layout to get a clean edge finish.

Step 5:
Grab a bottle of mist.
I wanted a Vintage, patina look to my layout so I used the Art Anthology "Focus" Spray from the Scraps of Darkness December Color Add On.

Step 6:
Mist the whole page.
You can then let it air dry, or if you are impatient like me dry it with your heat gun.
I actually dried mine so that it was not completely dry, because I wanted it to blend a bit with my next color to create the aged look I was after.

Step 7:
Grab some paint in the color that you want.
I used the Art Anthology "Baby Blue Eyes" Gelate Dimensional Gel Paint from the December Scraps Of Darkness Color Add On, along with a sponge brush.

Step 8:
I used the sponge brush to dab the paint onto my page, letting it lay heavy for dimension, and blend with the spray.

Step 9:
Let air dry, or if you love lots of texture, like I do, dry it with the heat gun to allow the dimension of the gel paint to expand.

Here you can see all the dimension, and blending that you get using this technique.

Step 10:
Take an ink pad of your choice, and just brush it over the top of the raised areas to pull out the design.

Step 11:
If you like distress edges, take a distress tool and gently go over the edges to rough them up. I do not recommend using the Zutter here, unless you want a torn edge look with the tin foil.

Step 12: (An optional step)
I wanted to add a frosty, Wintry look to my page, so I took Snow Tex and a flat brush and edged my page with it.

Here you can see the nice "icy" look it creates.

Here is a shot of my finished page at an angle, so that you can see the texture and dimension.

You are now ready to use your page on a layout.

I just love how the aluminum foil gives you a distressed metal look. It reminds me of an old Vintage tin ceiling.

I hope you enjoyed this tutorial, and look forward to seeing what you create with it!! ~Renea
