Soul Less

Lisa, (aka Raining) over at Scraps Of Darkness just started a new monthly challenge called Scrap That Title, and of course I had to play along!! Here is the criteria for the challenge:

This challenge will run Sept 15- Oct -15

Each month I will give you a title. You need to use the title as it stands on your layout and scrap what it conjures up for you. Imagine how fun it will be to see all the different interpretations of the same title.

The rules are: you must use the title I give you and you must use 50% Scraps of Darkness products.

This months title is: SOULESS (OR SOUL- LESS)

I love Goth Art, so as soon as I saw the word, I knew what photo I wanted to scrap, and this is what I came up with:
I used my Scraps Of Darkness September Kit-Passages, along with the Dusty Attic sketch for this month to create this layout. I started with some Bo Bunny pp from the kit and then took a piece of the Teresa Collins kit pp and cut and punched it for my background.

I then had this crazy idea that I wanted to use an old book cover for the framing of the photo, so I went into my junk closet and found an old hard back book, ripped out the pages and used it for the bottom frame layer. I actually loved the pp on the inside of the book cover so I left some of it showing, and then took a piece of the kit Teresa Collins pp, distressed it, inked it, and then punched the holes for the ribbon. I didn't have any ribbon that matched my colors, so I took some cream ribbon, and sprayed it with the Smooch Mist from this month's color add on to get the color I wanted. The ribbon tying was a lot harder than lacing, because you had to cut individual pieces of ribbon then lace it, and tie the bows to the correct size.

I then adhered my photo and attached some of the fabulous Vintaj metal pieces from the kit and accented them with pearls from my stash.

On the opposite side of the book page, I took a Prima flower from my stash and popped in some of the BoBunny CB pieces from the kit behind it. I then took some of the kit pp that had words on it and cut out the letters for the first part of the title from it "Death's Sword Is".

I pleated my punched paper upward and then took some more of those Vintaj metal pieces that came int he kit, and strung ribbon through them to form a tie down to my pleating and then popped some more pearls on for interest.

I then took a Prima Mask and misted the bottom part of the layout with the Wood Smooch spray from the CAO. Took 2 Dusty Attic Flourishes and Smooched them with the Berry Smooch from the CAO, stamped them with a music note stamp, then tied some of the same ribbon around it, adhered one of the little Vintaj metal keys from the kit onto each flourish and popped on some stash pearls.

I took some of the Bo Bunny CB letters from the kit and made the last part of my title "Soul Less" and then added one of the Prima Butterflies from the Flora & Fauna Add On, and finished up the layout.

I hope you enjoyed my interpretation of Lisa's word, Soul Less, I know I had fun creating this kind of dark, goth look layout. I love going outside the box sometimes, it keeps life interesting! ~ Renea

The Writing On The Wall **Scraps Of Darkness** Round Robin and Dark Side Challenge

I have so many layouts I want to get to with this month's amazingly gorgeous kit from Scraps Of Darkness called Passages that I had to double up on challenges to pull it all off! The following layout is playing double duty to both the Round Robin hosted by Lisa (aka Raining), and the fun Darkside Challenge hosted by Celina (aka forevervampress).

In the Round Robin, I am on Team 2 with Erica, Courtney and Monica. Erica kicked it off with her beautiful layout:

I am following Erica with this layout which is also my take on Celina's Challenge using communication. I chose The Writing On The Wall as my communication venue, and it features a photo of my son's friend Lauren standing in front of one of the many graffiti covered buildings popping up around town. Thanks Erica and Celina for your wonderful inspiration!

I started with the beautiful plum colored cardstock from this month's add on, and then took a piece of the kit Teresa Collins pp, and punched around the edges. I then cut out a circle from the same colored card stock and punched around the edges.

I then took a chipboard weathered clock from my Etsy Store, painted it with antique linen crackle paint, then inked it. Took one of the Teresa Collins Brads from the Romance add on used it to connect and attach the clock's hands.  For the layers behind the photo I took some card stock from last month's add on and deep distressed it and inked the edges. I took another piece of Teresa Collins pp from the kit and distressed and inked the edges of it, and adhered it with foam tape for dimension, then attached the photo with foam tape for layering dimension.

Next I took some Dusty Attic Bricks and cut them out randomly, then painted them with crackle paint then inked them and adhered them randomly throughout my layout. I then took a Prima Coventry Rose from the Flora & Fauna add on, along with some Prima Bella Notte flowers from last month's add on, that I touched up with some Tattered Angels Mist to match my layout, and formed the corner flower cluster.

I then took the cork piece that Mel included in our kit, cut it with my Sizzix then stamped it with the Prima brick stamp from the kit, took a chipboard flower, soaked it to get it to curl, painted it with TA Mist then popped a clock face in the center and a feather on the corner for interest.

I took the same plum card stock and punched it for the fan shaped border, added some stash Prima Pearls and then laced the fan with the Teresa Collins Trim from the kit.
To finish out the layout, I stamped my title onto pieces of the plum card stock with the black Mixed Media Ink from this month's color add on and randomly spread it over the layout, popping a couple of those super cool wire hangers from the Romance Add On, and then popped on some of my Elegance In Flight butterflies from my Etsy store.

I love challenges and this one was doubly fun! I also, love that Mel packs our kits full of such wonderful and unique pieces that bring out our creativity. Thanks for looking! ~Renea

SCRAPS OF DARKNESS SEPTEMBER 21st- OCTOBER 21st STALKER CHALLENGE

Each month, I host a Challenge over at Scraps Of Darkness  called the Stalker Challenge. This month's challenge invites the participants to stalk the internet or their files for one of those images they have always wanted to create something with, but haven't found the venue for, and create a Gothic Arch with it.  I have scanned in a copy of the templates for the different styles of arches. Just print them out on some heavy card stock and you have a set of templates for your scrap art arsenal. (Be sure to click on the image, and get the larger sized image that will print out onto a 8.5 x 11 size sheet to give you the correct arch size. Then hit Ctrl and the P on your keyboard to send it to the printer).  I just love pushing people out of their comfort zone, and getting them to try new things, and the girls are always such good sports about it, and come up with some really amazing works of art. I hope that you will join us!

The Rules:
1. Use at least 50 % Scraps of Darkness product. This can be kit product or store product.
2. Stalk the internet or your files for one of those images you love, but haven't found a venue for yet.
3. Use a piece of chipboard
4. Use a piece of paper bag somewhere on your arch
5. The most important rule of all-HAVE FUN!!

Here Are The Templates:

Here is my example for the challenge:

Original -Twisted Sketch #120 Twist-Button **Scraps Of Darkness**

Twisted Sketches just unveiled their sketch for this week and I was so happy to be playing along. If you would like to join us for Sketch #120 with the Twist-Button, just hop on over to Twistedsketches.org and join in the fun. Here is my take on this weeks sketch that I created with my Scraps Of Darkness September Kit-Passages. It features some photos of my son, Draven when he was around 2 years old. The photos are a little grainy, but I just love the tough guy look he had going on-he really is such an "Original"!

I was trying to get the worn, vintage look of denim on this layout, so I started with a piece of the  Teresa Collins pp from the kit and then started layering on top of it. I took a piece of the Bo Bunny pp from the kit and randomly punched it, distressed it, tore, inked it and then hand stitched it in places. I then took a Prima Mask and layed it onto the pp then misted the pp with some of the Colorinz Mist from a previous kit and then gesso'ed on top of that, then randomly stamped on top of that. (Wow, did that piece of paper get a work over! )

I then took a stash piece of pp and created the navy layer and then another piece of kit pp to back the photo. I distressed and inked the edges on those 2 pps and then took my larger photo, gesso'ed and used a paint dabber on it to soften the background.

I then took some chipboard stars that I had hand drawn and fussy cut out, and gave them the grunge treatment to get lots of dimension and then stickled the edges and popped one on each opposite corner of my photo.

Next, I took some of the Prima Canvas Mistable sheet from the color add on of a previous month's kit and misted it with the Colorinz Mist that I used on the pp and then cut it out in the shape of a pocket and hand stitched the detail. I then tucked a small photo of my son, along with a train embellie and a Tim Holtz ticket, into the pocket and foam taped it onto my photo for dimension.

I took a zipper that I had in my stash and cut it down to size then opened up one end and arranged some of the wooden buttons (the twist) from this month's kit into it, putting string through some of the buttons and wire through some of the others for texture.

I then took the leftover part of the zipper and glued it around the tear at the top of the page, tucked in some of that misted canvas and popped one of the buttons laced with wire in the peek a boo. I then finished out my layout with the title, by taking some stash corrugated alphas and inking the edges, then staggering them on the bottom.

Sketches are a fun way to get your groove on, and it is amazing how many different ways they can be interpreted. Just take a look at all the different layouts that the DT came up with from that sketch at www.twistedsketches.org and you will see what I mean! Thanks for dropping by! ~Renea

SCRAPS OF DARKNESS REVEALS THE SEPTEMBER KIT-PASSAGES

"I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I,
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference."
~ Robert Frost ~

This month the Scraps of Darkness family will be taking the road less traveled with (in my opinion) one of the most gorgeous kits I have ever seen. It is reveal day and Mel is unveiling the September Kit-Passages, and I am still reeling from it even after completing four layouts for the big day.

The name Passages is so appropriate. When I opened up this kit and began working with it, I immediately became a time traveler. Every layout I have produced with this kit has been scrapped with raw emotion, and so much of who I am has been put into each page. Each page, so far, has represented the people that I have loved, and cherished the most.  The first passage took me to a time when my son was little, and we were each other's world. A time when I was a young mother, and I didn't know how fast those years would fly by. The second passage took me back to the time when my husband and I first met, to that young love and the feeling of falling in love with the "one".  The third passage took me through the years of my Grandfather's life, and up to last year, when I lost one of the most important people in my life, and then very quickly lost the second-my Grandmother. The fourth passage took me to the place where I am called Aunt Nea Nea and have the privilege of being a part of my sister's, three wonderful children's life.

So come along, and join me for a journey through the passages of my life. I hope you enjoy this in depth look at some of the sweetest parts of my life, and thank you for letting me share these very personal pieces with you.

~Renea

Find Your Way Home

As soon as I opened this month's Scraps Of Darkness  kit -I fell in love with the pps, and as soon as I saw all the maps and pages that referenced passages in life, I knew immediately what photo I wanted to use the beautiful sketch from Charlotte (Sue Pup) for.  When my son was around 18 months old, we lived in an apartment we owned over our business, and it had two levels of stairs that we had completely enclosed when we knew our family was about to expand. Either me or my husband, or sometimes both would sit for what felt like hours, watching Draven climb up and down those stairs, over and over again. It was as if mastering the art of stair climbing was going to be his only focus, until he got it completely right. I remember watching him and as those little feet climbed those stairs, it occurred  to me that one day the steps my son would take, would perhaps lead him far away from me, off into his own journey. My mother's heart can only hope that no matter where his journey leads him he will always find his way back home.

This is Charlotte's gorgeous sketch:

And this is my take on the sketch:

This layout features some photos of my son, Draven, climbing on those steps I spoke about. My husband took these and I just love the large one where David caught Draven looking up at him. Just something about your own child's face that stirs something deep inside your heart. I started with a piece of black cardstock from this month's add on. I then took a piece of the stunning Teresa Collins map paper and distressed it deeply then stained the edges and did some machine sewing. Next came a piece of the Bo Bunny Et Cetera pp from the kit. I distressed it, inked it and did some more machine sewing.

I took a piece of the kit pp cut it to the size I wanted it, distressed and inked it up with the Mixed Media Ink from the color add on,  then took a piece of the Prima packaging and deep distressed it and inked the edges, then placed the photo. I then took my circle cutter and cut out two different sized black circles and then cut out the insides to leave the background pps showing through, placed them and added in the small photo that I had inked, and distressed the edges on and popped one of those little clothes hangers from the Romance Add On onto the corner.

Next, I took the Prima Mask from the color add on and did some of the grunged up stenciling with gel medium that I love. I then took some stash Dusty Attic bricks and painted them with snow tex -it looks so much like mortar-lol, and randomly placed them into the brick wall skeleton. I then created a compass by taking a digital image, altering it to match the colors in my layout, embossed the edges with distress powder and added a Tim Holtz spinner from my stash, and popped it into the upper corner.

I took a red Jenny Bowlin Doily Flower from the kit and a black one from the Flora & Fauna Add On and added TH spinners to the centers and then added one of the so sweet Prima Printery Flowers from the Flora & Fauna AO to complete the corner design. I took one of the Bo Bunny Chipboard Flourishes from the kit and added it for interest beside my smaller photo.

I created a map journal using some map stationary, twine from the Teresa Collin's trims in the kit and one of the kit T. Collins brads, and that journaling that has been in my heart through the years. I created the "home"  of the journaling by taking the chipboard letters from the kit and grunging them up. I then stamped some of the Prima packaging with one of the Glitz' stamps, fussy cut it and added it to my layout.

I created the page border by punching one of the kit pps and then hand stitched it for added interest. I left the stitch threads hanging and tied on a TH metal tag that says "journey". I then took one of the butterflies that I share with all my Dark Sisters, in the Scraps Of Darkness Scrap Chat Forum and gussied it up and popped it onto one of my circles.

I swear I can just look at that little face and cry.  That little face has now turned into the face of  a 16 year old, and I know that I will turn around and he will be off and onto a different life. I am so proud of him! He is a wonderful son,  and I love watching him changing and turning into his own person, but I do hope with all my heart that no matter where his journey takes him that he will always find his way back home! Thanks for letting me share, my heart with you! ~Renea

Class Of "81"

I created the following layout for a challenge that ScrapMatts is hosting. The challenge is to scrap lift someone from their gallery. I chose to scrap lift Sonia Thomason's layout, "17 years".

This is Sonia's gorgeous layout:

This is my lift:

I created this challenge layout using my Scraps Of Darkness  September Kit-Passages, and it features my husband's Senior Picture from his graduating class of 1981.  I had been waiting on the perfect pps to scrap this photo with and they arrived at my front door when this month's kit arrived! My husband and I have been married for 21 years and dated for 3 years. I have actually known him since I was 15 years old, so yes I knew him back when he had the feathered hair, and smooth skin. I loved those beautiful brown eyes back then and I am still in love with them all these years later.

I started this layout with a piece of card stock from last month's add on, then took a piece of this month's Bo Bunny Et Cetera paper and distressed it heavily, and then stained the edges. I took a 2nd piece of BB paper and tore it to the size I wanted and stained the edges. The 3rd layer is a piece of card stock from last month's add on that I water distressed, inked up with the Mixed Media Leather Ink from this month's color add on and then stained the edges with the Tim Holtz stain from July's Kit. I then positioned my photo and got to work on the details.

I took a large rustic grunged up gear from my Etsy Shop , some SM gears that I painted up using different techniques, a large Petaloo flower from my stash, a Prima sugar plum rose from a previous kit and one of the Prima printery flowers from the Flora & Fauna Add On, and a Spare Parts Clock Face from my stash, and created my flower layer. I then took a SM flourish that I cut in 1/2 to look like a hinge and gussied it up with Mist and puff paint.

I then went to the top right hand corner and repeated the layering, with the only difference being that I added in a Tattered Angels Antique key that I accented with some of the Smooch Paint from this month's Color Add On.

I took a Tim Holtz Antique plate and accented it with the Smooch Paint from the color add on and put the 81 of my title onto cream cardstock and adhered it to the plate. I added some burlap to the photo edge, did some hand stitching and accented a stash TH photo corner and added it to the bottom corner of the pp.

I then finished my title out at the top of the layout, did some more hand stitching, added some burlap and one of the Prima Butterflies from the Flora & Fauna Add On, and another accented TH photo corner. Then to add a bit more texture and visual interest, I went through and stamped a grunge pattern randomly on the layout with the Mixed Media Leather Ink from the color add on. And that was my lift!

Thank you Sonia for your inspiration, and thank you to all my friends for taking the time to look! ~Renea

Passages

This is a layout of my Grandpa, James W. Goins when he first came to Chattanooga from Ohio with his son Ralph. I chose the title from the Scraps Of Darkness kit name, because Passages was so fitting for this layout. My Grandfather had just divorced, and decided to make a change. He moved from Ohio to Chattanooga, to live with his sister, where he eventually met and married my Grandmother, Viola Mannery, who had experienced a divorce and who also had a child from that first marriage, my Dad.

My Pawpaw was such an amazing part of my life. He is who I get so much of who I am from. We were buddies. I lived most of my young years at their home, and although we didn't have much we certainly had love. I constantly followed my Grandpa around, a little apprentice you might have called me. My Grandpa made a living, fixing up old junk and selling it at flea markets, making all kinds of things from wood, painting, and creating miniatures. He loved music, dancing and just about anything that required that you do it while smiling or laughing. He lived life with a child like wonder, and had a smile and attitude that was contagious. I had no idea that he was not my true blood Grandpa, until someone told me when I was about 10, but it didn't matter to me or him, we were a part of each other no matter what was running through our veins.

I started with a piece of the Teresa Collins pp from the kit. I then traced a template onto the black and cream kit pp, inked and distressed the edges and set eyelets around the edges. I took a piece of the BoBunny pp from the kit, and repeated the process, using a smaller template.

I took some of the kit pp and cut it into strips, deep distressed it and stained the edges with some of the Tim Holtz stain from a previous Color Add on. I took another piece of pp cut it down to a photo mat, and distressed and inked the edges with  Mixed Media Black Ink from this month's Color Add.
I painted a Dusty Attic Corner piece with Tattered Angels Glam and then accented it with some of the Lettuce Smooch Paint from this month's CAO.  The photo of my Paw Paw is very old and had gotten torn and creased over the years, but I loved the worn look of it, so I printed it out the way it was, and then inked the torn edges, and then took a close up that I had managed to fix some and used it behind the ragged one. My Paw Paw loved to look nice, and he loved fadora hats. Even on into his 90's he would get dressed up and put on a fadora when going somewhere nice.

I created the collage at the corner of the layout by taking a Bo Bunny chipboard flourish from the kit, and popping on 3 of the roses from the Flora & Fauna add on. I then tucked in a Tim Holtz Clock from my stash, a DA Key that I stained with the TH stain from a previous CAO and then accented with the Lettuce and Pumpkin Smooch Paint from this month's CAO. Next I used one of the Glitz Girls Stamps from the Romance add on and stamped the red & white ticket and tucked it in. I then took a little suitcase piece I had in may stash and colored in some red accents and tucked it in.

I then cut out some tags from the kit pp using my Sizzix, added some of the Teresa Collins Brads from the Romance add on, and tied some twine around them. I then printed out pieces of my journaling onto white card stock and inked the edges and adhered them to the tags.

In May of this year, it was the 1st year anniversary of my Paw Paw's passing, and my family had asked if I would write a remembrance for the local newspapers, I of course said yes. That remembrance is what I used on the tags and reads:

I whisper to myself, Happy Birthday Paw Paw
I hope you don’t mind if I’m still missing you,  if a few teardrops fall
I’ll take the time to celebrate you, in my own way
I’ll remember a life well lived, by what I do today
I’ll "Walk the Floor" with old Hank Williams, or pick some "Wildwood Flowers"
I’ll visit with the ones I love, tell stories and talk for hours.
I’ll create something beautiful with my own two hands
I’ll draw or maybe I’ll paint,
I’ll carve and I’ll sand
I’ll Charleston, play card tricks and laugh till I cry
I’ll bow my head and give grace, find enough faith to get by.
As I fall into bed with my memories, I’ll realize I am not alone
As your family and friends all remember you today, your legacy will live on

For the final piece on the layout I created my title, by using my Sizzix to cut out some round tags, that I inked and distressed the edges on. I then set metal eyelets, and metal brads, then popped on the letters from my stash. I cut out a square tag and stamped it with a piece of the Glitz Girl ticket stamp set an eyelet, then took Tim Holtz Ball Chain and ran it through all the eyelets. I adhered each letter piece with foam tape for dimension, and to keep them from moving around, and that completed this heart wrenching layout.

Thank you for letting me share a piece of the sweet relationship that I shared with my Paw Paw, and some little pieces of who he was. I am so grateful for your company along this journey. I am feeling just a little drained after that one, so for now ~Hugs, Renea

Family

The following layout was created using the Scraps Of Darkness September Kit-Passages, and a beautiful sketch #92 that was done by Ashley Van Etten. She created the sketch for Little Shop Of Sketches, and although I could not do the sketch in their time frame, I saved it to use with this kit. Thank you Ashley, for the inspiration!

 Ashley's Sketch #92:

The layout  is of my niece Megan, my nephew Zach, and my little niece Haley. To them I am Aunt Nea Nea, and I just love to hear them call me that. Something special about a nickname that comes from your baby sister's children. They are all growing up fast, so I am glad my sister had this photo done of them together before their lives headed out in different directions.

I started this layout with a piece of stash card stock then took a piece of the white card stock from this month's add on and did some technique work. First, i distressed it heavily even tearing and rolling the paper in places. I then took some of the stain from a previous kit and distress stained the edges. I then took some of the Smooch Spritz from this month's C.A.O. and misted some places and then unscrewed the top and flipped some of the color onto the page in large splotches.
I then took a Crafter's Workshop Clock template and used gel medium to create the 2 different clock faces. With the template still in place, I spritzed it with the Smooch Spritzes from the C.A.O. , then gently removed the template.

I then took 2 different pieces of  kit pp and heavily distressed and inked the edges to create the layers behind the photo. I then adhered the photo, and used some of the Bo Bunny Rub Ons from the Romance add on to add interest to the bottom layer. I took one of the flowers from the Flora & Fauna A.O. painted the center bling with the Smooch from the CAO, then took 2 flowers from a previous kit, pulled the centers off, took some of the Prima Printery Flowers from the Flora & Fauna A.O., smooched them with the same smooch spritz and popped them in the blank centers to create new flowers that matched my layout.
I cut pieces of pp, and punched the edges, and popped it behind the peek a boos my paper tears had created. I then took some of the Teresa Collins trim from the kit and pleated it to form the bottom piece,  used the same flower process as the one I used on the photo corner flowers to create the flower layer. I stamped the frame image using the Glitz Girl Stamp from the Romance A.O. and then stamped the work FAMILY onto it using the Mixed Media Ink from the C.A.O. added a Prima pearl from my stash and a small SM chipboard butterfly that I had painted with Mica from last month's C.A.O. and smooched with this month's spritz.
For the upper corner piece, I used one of the Bo Bunny Rub Ons from the Romance A.O. , a piece of the leftover T.C. trim from the bottom piece, 2  of the Smooched Prima Flowers, a stash clock face with a smooched brad, and a SM chipboard butterfly that I painted with Mica and then used the smooch spritz to paint the accent on.

Thank you for joining me in my time travels, I hope you have enjoyed the first part of the ride through the four reveal layouts I created using the gorgeous Passages kit. I am off to see where else my mind and this kit takes me, and hope you will join me! Until then ~Renea
